This discussion started around a hypothetical question about why animals are allowed to compete in some formats (like racing) and not in others (fighting). While some would find the spectacle fascinating, animals can’t really give consent to fight…but they can’t consent to race either. Why is one ok and the other not?
This evolved into a broader discussion about combat sports and whether or not humans fighting is entirely ethical either.
Matt Ogihara (@matt_ogi) and Sebastian Brambilla (@sebastian_brambila) joined us for this one.

00:00:06.519 --> 00:00:10.359
Hey, ladies and gentlemen, welcome
to another topic Thunder, where we take
2
00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:13.519
your questions from discord and we also
have topicals and we'll cover them in five
3
00:00:13.519 --> 00:00:16.120
to ten minutes as quick as possible. This just popped in my head and
4
00:00:16.160 --> 00:00:21.960
it made sense because I was listening
to a debate on the Internet between two
5
00:00:22.039 --> 00:00:25.559
content creators and one was kind of
going on and I mentioned it before about
6
00:00:25.559 --> 00:00:32.439
like UFC and casual fans, but
people, some people think the UFC is
7
00:00:32.759 --> 00:00:35.439
megabarbaric, although there's tons of rules
and it's evolved. You know, if
8
00:00:35.439 --> 00:00:39.240
you go watch UFC one or Pride, like there's no rules, like people
9
00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:42.359
are just dying, you know,
like there's no weight classes, they're on
10
00:00:42.439 --> 00:00:45.439
steroids. You can kick people while
they're down, you're kneeing them in the
11
00:00:45.479 --> 00:00:48.960
back of the head, and shit, tons of rules have made clean that
12
00:00:49.079 --> 00:00:54.920
up. And some people think fighting
is like like the first sport ever or
13
00:00:54.960 --> 00:00:57.240
something. Right, Like, there's
running, there's picking heavy shit like oh,
14
00:00:57.240 --> 00:00:58.840
Bay, can you pick up that
rock? I can pick up that
15
00:00:58.920 --> 00:01:00.719
rock. There's running, and then
there's and then there's gladiator ship, which
16
00:01:00.759 --> 00:01:03.760
is obviously like slaves, so that
brings a whole other ripple into it.
17
00:01:03.799 --> 00:01:08.000
But these guys are choosing to fight. Why is it that like that?
18
00:01:08.200 --> 00:01:11.840
And I'm probably gonna sound bad saying
this, but I don't really care.
19
00:01:11.159 --> 00:01:15.079
Why is it that we allow like
two humans to fight. I guess because
20
00:01:15.079 --> 00:01:17.799
they can choose. I just answer
my own question. But long story short
21
00:01:17.920 --> 00:01:21.200
is why don't we have like animal
fights? Like why is that so forbidden?
22
00:01:22.519 --> 00:01:23.879
Michael Vick on this, No,
not necessarily, Michael Vick, like
23
00:01:23.879 --> 00:01:27.480
your backyard ship, But I do
think, like because I think Gladiator days
24
00:01:27.480 --> 00:01:30.879
they would have that, they would
have human versus lyon, or they'd have
25
00:01:30.879 --> 00:01:34.920
the gorilla, they'd have grizzly bear
versus lyon. Because they're like, you
26
00:01:34.920 --> 00:01:38.920
know, we still have bull fighting? Yeah, right right, you can
27
00:01:38.959 --> 00:01:41.799
stab a bull with the sword,
and I understand the tradition, and you
28
00:01:41.879 --> 00:01:42.799
know, I'm not here to judge
any of it. You know, who
29
00:01:42.840 --> 00:01:46.959
am I to judge? But yeah, that's totally legal to fight a bull
30
00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:49.519
with a sword, or even fight
a bull and just like avoid it or
31
00:01:49.599 --> 00:01:52.959
ride a bull that they're that bull
is obviously not in a good mindset.
32
00:01:52.959 --> 00:01:56.239
If you guys have watched bull riding, like they pissed that thing off somehow.
33
00:01:56.400 --> 00:02:00.079
Yeah, like how is that humane? And that's American because because the
34
00:02:00.159 --> 00:02:00.959
other one you could say, like, oh that's Europe they do their own
35
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:04.200
ship or tradition. I think that
was just Spain. Do we do it
36
00:02:04.239 --> 00:02:06.640
here? No, that's what I'm
saying, but bull riding. My point
37
00:02:06.719 --> 00:02:09.840
is here, they're pissing that thing
off somehow. They're not feeding that thing
38
00:02:09.840 --> 00:02:13.280
a good dinner. And you know
what I mean, because he's coming out
39
00:02:13.280 --> 00:02:15.919
of that cage fucking pissed. Period. They're fucking with it right, Yeah
40
00:02:16.039 --> 00:02:20.639
for sure, for sure, And
that's all cool and like yehaw and then
41
00:02:20.719 --> 00:02:24.479
yeah, like vic stuffs obviously crazy, but I do think like exotic animal
42
00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:29.919
fights would be kind of cool,
like lion versus I mean, like we're
43
00:02:29.919 --> 00:02:31.800
talking about Josh Emmon and congrats to
him on his big fight, but like
44
00:02:32.039 --> 00:02:36.199
that's brutal what he did to that
guy. Yeah, like that's not healthy.
45
00:02:36.520 --> 00:02:39.639
No, And obviously he's consenting,
and we consider a human able to
46
00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:44.120
consent and a grizzly bear not.
Yeah, for sure, I get that
47
00:02:44.159 --> 00:02:46.960
point. I guess they're just just
instinct. I think, yeah, I
48
00:02:47.039 --> 00:02:51.879
just I don't know why some parts
of it are okay and others are not.
49
00:02:53.680 --> 00:02:57.639
It seems like it should either be
all okay or not okay, and
50
00:02:57.680 --> 00:03:00.080
probably on the not okay side.
Yeah, And I understand if you make
51
00:03:00.080 --> 00:03:05.360
the division by like mammal, this
bug insect. I understand that division,
52
00:03:05.400 --> 00:03:07.400
but like you said, it's all
over the place. Yeah, because if
53
00:03:07.400 --> 00:03:12.400
we did ant fights or mice fights, people probably wouldn't bat nine if they
54
00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:15.560
have them on a they go,
yes, mice versus like a bug or
55
00:03:15.800 --> 00:03:22.240
that's someone in their backyard. That's
not like a professional I'm throwing down two
56
00:03:22.319 --> 00:03:25.759
point two manis versus a ransom.
Yeah, Like so insects, right,
57
00:03:25.800 --> 00:03:30.319
I do understand the differentiation there,
like brain size, intelligence, Yeah,
58
00:03:30.400 --> 00:03:32.479
all that scoping all the way up
where they're saying, like you know,
59
00:03:32.560 --> 00:03:37.759
dolphins and octopus even dogs. I
think I think they say dogs accuse are
60
00:03:37.800 --> 00:03:40.599
not IQ necessarily, but like intelligence
ish is like a two year old human,
61
00:03:42.680 --> 00:03:44.599
right, so then an octopus is
like an eight year old and a
62
00:03:44.599 --> 00:03:47.479
pig Like, there's some really smart
creatures out there, So yeah, I
63
00:03:47.599 --> 00:03:51.159
just don't get it. Yeah,
the bullfighting is a really good example.
64
00:03:51.159 --> 00:03:54.000
We're literally just stabbing that thing in
the heart with the sword hunting, and
65
00:03:54.039 --> 00:03:57.599
I understand most people eat it,
but some people don't eat it. And
66
00:03:57.599 --> 00:04:00.319
again I'm not the judge. I'm
I'm kind of for it all. Yeah,
67
00:04:00.360 --> 00:04:03.599
Like imagine a TV show that's literally
the gorilla versus a bear and you
68
00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:11.400
just eat them in a ring like
that's entertainment. I mean, it's been
69
00:04:11.400 --> 00:04:15.959
an internet to bay for twenty years. I probably that's probably not something I
70
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:19.519
would watch if it was going on. And I don't watch like bull riding
71
00:04:19.600 --> 00:04:21.480
or any of that stuff either,
So I don't bull writing is a little
72
00:04:21.480 --> 00:04:25.560
boring, but I watched the shit
out some UFC. I don't necessarily watch
73
00:04:25.639 --> 00:04:29.600
like i'd probably Yeah, I don't
know. Yeah, bull fighting's weird.
74
00:04:29.800 --> 00:04:34.360
Some shorts on them sponsorship Blue Corner
now, but betting on it would be
75
00:04:34.399 --> 00:04:39.399
crazy. Horse riding seems inhumane.
I mean I don't really some horse people
76
00:04:39.399 --> 00:04:41.839
are gonna come for me, like, hey, spanking, it doesn't feel
77
00:04:41.879 --> 00:04:44.480
that bad. But like again,
like, yeah, if we allowed some
78
00:04:44.680 --> 00:04:47.519
dog racing, Yeah, I've been
to those Florida. Yeah, it's kind
79
00:04:47.519 --> 00:04:53.160
of cool. That was a little
less to me because they're not like getting
80
00:04:53.199 --> 00:04:56.240
slapped in the ass, they're trasing
a bunny. Yeah, you know that
81
00:04:56.279 --> 00:04:59.759
feels like some of those animals are
like it. I don't know that it's
82
00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:01.920
the race that itself is the issue. I think it's the preparation. I
83
00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:04.720
think that's true with horses because they, yeah, they're injected with steroids and
84
00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:08.480
shit, and they're getting caught and
they're not getting caught. I mean with
85
00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:12.199
horses, the chances of injury,
you know, are pretty significant, because
86
00:05:12.240 --> 00:05:15.399
like, if you're a horse and
you get significantly injured, they're just gonna
87
00:05:15.480 --> 00:05:18.040
kill you. Yeah, they're not. Actually, Yeah, horse racing seems
88
00:05:18.079 --> 00:05:20.279
worse than dog racing. One I
am a dog fan, but two,
89
00:05:20.800 --> 00:05:25.120
uh, the money involved in that
world is insane, right, some of
90
00:05:25.120 --> 00:05:28.800
those horses are worth hundreds of thousands
of dollars, where like dog racing is
91
00:05:28.839 --> 00:05:32.319
so backyard Florida shit, where they're
like greyhounds chasing a bunny around a track.
92
00:05:32.360 --> 00:05:35.560
It seems more innocent to me.
Yeah, the steroids, the injuries,
93
00:05:35.720 --> 00:05:39.439
the spanking the fuck out of them, the money. Whenever there's money
94
00:05:39.480 --> 00:05:43.360
on the line and then there's humans
involved, she's gonna get corrupt, absolutely
95
00:05:43.439 --> 00:05:45.399
right. We're like, I don't
know if those dogs, those dogs you
96
00:05:45.439 --> 00:05:48.800
can adopt afterwards, like for free. I have a friend who Yeah,
97
00:05:48.800 --> 00:05:51.879
my mom wants a greyhound so bad
or retired racing. My friend has.
98
00:05:53.360 --> 00:05:56.319
She lives in Maryland. Greyhounds are
good dogs. But yeah, it just
99
00:05:56.360 --> 00:06:00.439
seems the line is so blurred.
I wonder if other countries have that ship.
100
00:06:00.560 --> 00:06:04.920
Chicken fights, Yeah, cock fights, and that's what they're called.
101
00:06:04.959 --> 00:06:09.360
It called cock fights. They're not
called chicken fights, they're not called foul
102
00:06:09.439 --> 00:06:14.319
fights. Well, it's because they're
the roosters, not the Yeah, not
103
00:06:14.399 --> 00:06:23.480
the hens. Yeah c A w
k A U okay because us he's huge,
104
00:06:23.920 --> 00:06:26.959
a bare knuckle, bare knuckles fucking
brutal. I think that ship's only
105
00:06:26.959 --> 00:06:31.879
happening in Florida. I don't even
think Nevada Commission cond of But those motherfuckers
106
00:06:31.920 --> 00:06:40.040
are still breaking hosal bones everything,
slap fighting, crazy nuts. Those guys
107
00:06:40.040 --> 00:06:43.800
are all getting seizures. Yeah,
and it's in the midst of like CT
108
00:06:44.120 --> 00:06:46.600
being popular. I don't even get
that, Like that just seems like a
109
00:06:46.639 --> 00:06:49.759
bad I did shout out boy Nikki
Rod. I did watch Niki Rod on
110
00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:54.480
UFC Fight Pass, which is cool. It is cool Dana even though it's
111
00:06:54.519 --> 00:06:58.800
not Dana, but it's still Dana
White. Is like trying to make other
112
00:06:58.879 --> 00:07:01.639
sports cool with money and shit.
He said he gets more impressions than he's
113
00:07:01.680 --> 00:07:06.279
a genius bro. Power Slap he
started to push because of the Internet.
114
00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:12.160
Uh, purely because of the Internet
impressions really because of the clips. It's
115
00:07:12.199 --> 00:07:15.480
his clips to pull people into UFC. So many clips. Yeah, those
116
00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:18.000
clips go harder because like you can't
predict the knockout and shit in like the
117
00:07:18.040 --> 00:07:21.519
UFC, and sometimes there's whole cards
without something crazy happening, but a power
118
00:07:21.560 --> 00:07:26.639
Slap something is guaranteed to happen.
And he literally uses it as like his
119
00:07:27.240 --> 00:07:30.439
first portal of this marketing funnel.
I got to do it on the right
120
00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:32.240
less than fun slaps. And those
guys weren't making any money, right,
121
00:07:32.279 --> 00:07:34.959
they're doing in their backyard, So
you pay them a hundred bucks put some
122
00:07:35.079 --> 00:07:40.680
lights on them. Yeah, I'll
the points. Like there's no competitions right
123
00:07:40.759 --> 00:07:44.160
where like UFC, they're like the
PFL is big. You can obviously go
124
00:07:44.199 --> 00:07:47.560
to Bare Knuckle, Like there's other
options for even MMA like Ryan Gordon and
125
00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:51.279
Nikki Rott, Like they're making six
figures plus being a jiu jitsu artist,
126
00:07:51.480 --> 00:07:55.720
Like there's options place like Gordon Ryan, I mean that fool is making so
127
00:07:55.800 --> 00:07:59.680
much money on how to videos and
shit, like there's legitimate money in these
128
00:07:59.720 --> 00:08:03.720
stuff, but not in power slap
yet. So it's the cheapest marketing acquisition.
129
00:08:03.959 --> 00:08:07.720
Just smart because yeah they're doing jiu
jitsu, they're doing something else too.
130
00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:11.879
I forgot get Larry Wheel on that
slap fight bro celebrities that I thought
131
00:08:11.879 --> 00:08:16.560
about because celebrity boxing is so big
right now. Celebrity or like content creator,
132
00:08:16.959 --> 00:08:20.920
slap boxing would be the genius because
you can't you can, but you
133
00:08:20.920 --> 00:08:24.439
don't need to train for it.
Yeah, like you if you take two
134
00:08:24.560 --> 00:08:28.639
YouTubers and they're trash athletes, right, which probably ninety percent of them are,
135
00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:31.600
right logo type, Yeah, those
are the two that kind of were
136
00:08:31.639 --> 00:08:35.279
good athletes, but the rest of
them aren't. But you try to make
137
00:08:35.279 --> 00:08:37.039
them all fight. They're always trying
to make like different call of duty kids
138
00:08:37.080 --> 00:08:41.399
fight and then go through a training
boxing camp. But if they're non athlete,
139
00:08:41.559 --> 00:08:46.200
but you but you you have them
do a slap box. Everyone knows
140
00:08:46.200 --> 00:08:52.480
that a slap let's get oh right, how good would like a legitimate slap
141
00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:54.960
I mean you can't do a homie
because you really like some of those dudes
142
00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:58.519
are pissed Bruce. I don't think
those guys. Yeah, you need some
143
00:08:58.759 --> 00:09:05.320
drama, you need some of the
drop that would Yeah, you need some
144
00:09:05.399 --> 00:09:09.240
ship like that that would go mega
viral. So tune in for thursd Street
145
00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:13.279
Slight. I don't know if our
insurance covers that. That's what you do,
146
00:09:13.639 --> 00:09:16.159
dude. They let them fall.
Sometimes they have like a spotter behind
147
00:09:16.200 --> 00:09:18.039
them and you have to hold the
pad behind it. Sometimes they eat ship.
148
00:09:18.120 --> 00:09:20.639
Yeah, I'm like, bro,
catch my boy. Yeah. I
149
00:09:20.679 --> 00:09:22.279
wonder if they have like a padded
floor so you you hit the back of
150
00:09:22.279 --> 00:09:24.519
your head on a full drop like
that, you're gonna get fucked up.
151
00:09:24.759 --> 00:09:28.600
Actually, that brings up a point
that's probably probably could do a whole episode
152
00:09:28.639 --> 00:09:33.639
on this, But so what I
follow on on social who's a usa pl
153
00:09:33.720 --> 00:09:43.879
lifter commented that, uh, somebody
backspotting deadlifts is bullshit and shouldn't happen because
154
00:09:43.080 --> 00:09:48.080
most of the time when people are
falling down, it's they're faking because they
155
00:09:48.159 --> 00:09:52.120
missed their lift. Interesting. I
think that's complete bull I've seen I've seen
156
00:09:52.159 --> 00:09:56.399
people fall down and hit their head
in the natty. Yeah, it might
157
00:09:56.399 --> 00:09:58.639
be more common in the natty world
because your blood pressure is a little different.
158
00:09:58.679 --> 00:10:03.039
There's a less there's less options to
pass out. I think that guy
159
00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:07.919
just doesn't strong enough. But then
even still, like someone faking it could
160
00:10:07.919 --> 00:10:09.639
get fucked up, and then like, what's the harm of one person being
161
00:10:09.639 --> 00:10:13.960
there? Yeah, there's no net
negative. That's actually a thing about social
162
00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:18.279
media that has been crazy people bitching
about things that do not affect them in
163
00:10:18.320 --> 00:10:22.600
any way at all. Especially like
so I would understand if no, like
164
00:10:22.600 --> 00:10:26.039
if we're at a level of powerlifting
where there's no spotters anywhere, Right,
165
00:10:26.039 --> 00:10:28.879
we have machines or futuristic shit.
I understand, right, because you're trying
166
00:10:28.879 --> 00:10:33.440
to but we already have six guys
spotting squads. But yeah, what's the
167
00:10:33.480 --> 00:10:35.000
harm of one guy? One guy? Yeah, and they don't they don't
168
00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:39.960
intervene unless the person's going down.
Yeah. I have seen recent meets within
169
00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:43.399
the last year where there's been no
backspot in people of even if they're stumbling,
170
00:10:43.639 --> 00:10:46.240
you know, just catch them or
whatever. I was surprised that at
171
00:10:46.360 --> 00:10:50.879
big meats or medium level meets,
I made it to social media media where
172
00:10:50.919 --> 00:10:54.879
they had no spot on deathlas makes
no sense. It's the easiest way to
173
00:10:54.919 --> 00:10:58.440
spot too, it's the easiest spot
like. It's not really weight dependent.
174
00:10:58.440 --> 00:11:03.559
It's not that much size dependent,
although a bigger person often can catch better.
175
00:11:03.600 --> 00:11:05.519
But you know, you got ogie
back there, and then you have
176
00:11:05.559 --> 00:11:09.960
a super heavyweight. I'm still catching
people. We're better catching him than one
177
00:11:09.960 --> 00:11:13.440
thousand pounds squad for sure. True
hundred packs. Yeah, all right,
178
00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:20.559
that's it working. People find you, dude, ship go on ship farting.
179
00:11:20.759 --> 00:11:24.919
I was gonna say that studied and
I lost what I was gonna say.
180
00:11:26.120 --> 00:11:28.000
I thought he was pooping first.
Yeah, so like when that happens,
181
00:11:28.080 --> 00:11:31.919
you just continue to get it,
get it out focus. Yeah,
