The exploding popularity of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy has raised awareness and demand for these “medical miracles” among the severely overweight…and the not-so-severely overweight.

Some questions have arisen about side effects – some merely annoying and some potentially dangerous. One complaint is the loss of lean muscle mass. While this is obviously not ideal, is there something specific about these drugs that contributes to muscle loss, or is it nothing more than a normal effect of weight loss by any method? How can it be prevented?

1
00:00:08.039 --> 00:00:11.439
Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to one
good question, or one good topic,

2
00:00:11.519 --> 00:00:15.519
or whatever the hell we want to
talk about on our Friday episode. Head

3
00:00:15.519 --> 00:00:19.719
over to three SB dot COO for
all your apparel needs today. I think

4
00:00:19.760 --> 00:00:25.359
we're talking about drugs, drugs,
weight loss drugs in particular. I was

5
00:00:25.440 --> 00:00:33.159
lessually listening to another podcast this morning
and on the topic of weight loss drugs

6
00:00:33.439 --> 00:00:38.840
like ozepic and we go V and
whatever, whatever whatever. And you know,

7
00:00:38.920 --> 00:00:42.039
a year ago, everyone, you
know, not everyone, but a

8
00:00:42.079 --> 00:00:45.240
lot of people were like, Hey, these these drugs are great and there's

9
00:00:45.359 --> 00:00:49.039
like no side effect to them really
at all, and really it's just all

10
00:00:49.119 --> 00:00:53.439
kind of all benefit and yeah and
whatever, which just can't be true,

11
00:00:53.640 --> 00:00:56.520
which can't be true because there's I
mean, it's impossible. Yeah, there's

12
00:00:56.560 --> 00:01:00.640
always there's always something. Yeah,
there's always effects. Yeah, yeah,

13
00:01:00.679 --> 00:01:03.040
you get everything's fucking yeah. Great. When they say there's no such thing

14
00:01:03.079 --> 00:01:07.200
as a free lunch, they're not
just talking about libertarianism. They're talking about

15
00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:12.040
about anything that you that you you're
trying to alter yourself with. There's got

16
00:01:12.079 --> 00:01:15.799
to be every decision in life.
Yeah, there's gonna be an effect.

17
00:01:15.840 --> 00:01:19.640
Yeah, for sure, there's always
there are always consequences. Yeah, but

18
00:01:19.159 --> 00:01:23.000
the one I mean there there are
there are several that are being looked at

19
00:01:23.079 --> 00:01:27.239
right now that are potentially problems.
One that does seem to be a thing

20
00:01:27.560 --> 00:01:34.959
is is slowing down how the stomach
works, like maybe absorption itself. I

21
00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:40.959
mean, that's the concept of fat
loss pills or weight loss pills in general,

22
00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:48.959
just by logic. And obviously there's
many metrics and many different like channels

23
00:01:48.959 --> 00:01:52.599
they can go through to cause weight
loss, but all of them are affecting

24
00:01:52.680 --> 00:01:56.200
probably what you absorb, and so
you're probably gonna have some kind of health

25
00:01:56.239 --> 00:01:57.519
issue. Yeah. And then like
you're not gett enough vitamins, you're not

26
00:01:57.519 --> 00:02:02.840
get enough minerals, maybe the protein
synthesis is affected, who knows. Yeah,

27
00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:06.599
And then it's always just to what
extent, like how fatten out of

28
00:02:06.640 --> 00:02:10.039
shape and unhealthy are you? And
is this worse or better? Yeah?

29
00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:14.400
Yeah? Are you? Are you
improving your your outcomes enough? Yeah,

30
00:02:14.439 --> 00:02:16.759
which is probably true if you're very
unhealthy. But with those zepic in particular,

31
00:02:16.759 --> 00:02:21.400
it's gotten so popular because it does
work so well that it's being like

32
00:02:21.520 --> 00:02:23.960
over the counter used, It's being
used left and right. Yeah, by

33
00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:29.159
like just folks. Yeah, and
if you're like semi healthy and just want

34
00:02:29.159 --> 00:02:32.439
to get shredded, now, those
negatives that may come from any pill,

35
00:02:32.520 --> 00:02:36.560
not even just this one, are
probably not worth it, right, But

36
00:02:36.560 --> 00:02:38.800
if you're on the edge of death
and you're eight hundred pounds and your type

37
00:02:38.800 --> 00:02:43.919
two and your blood pressure and all
this, then you know it might be

38
00:02:43.919 --> 00:02:47.360
worth a little writ more more of
a stronger attack. Yeah, like more,

39
00:02:47.520 --> 00:02:52.159
more in that vain. Previous guests
on this show doctor Spencer and the

40
00:02:52.439 --> 00:03:00.360
Nadelski is a proponent of these of
these drugs, and he points out that

41
00:03:00.360 --> 00:03:05.280
he's been called a shill for Big
Farm or whatever for doing this, but

42
00:03:05.400 --> 00:03:10.039
like his point is that people who
are are are desperate the you know,

43
00:03:10.120 --> 00:03:14.960
the the end justify the means.
Yeah, yeah, Yeah, it's obviously

44
00:03:15.360 --> 00:03:19.319
per person. And the issue with
someone like Nadolski is that he's an online

45
00:03:19.759 --> 00:03:23.360
presence, so things can get clipped
out of context, taken out of context.

46
00:03:23.599 --> 00:03:25.080
Yeah, he only has one hundred
and forty words to get across what

47
00:03:25.120 --> 00:03:28.439
he's trying to say. Yeah,
and then people are gonna take what they

48
00:03:28.479 --> 00:03:30.439
want, Like, I'm sure we
could talk to him and he's not gonna

49
00:03:30.479 --> 00:03:34.400
say like I should take it right
now to drop my last five pounds.

50
00:03:34.879 --> 00:03:37.280
A. Yeah, because that doesn't
actually make any sense. You you you,

51
00:03:37.280 --> 00:03:38.960
I mean, you probably wouldn't qualify
for just just on that on that

52
00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:42.879
basis, unless you were, like, I don't know, borderline diabetic or

53
00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:45.280
something. Yeah, I don't think
qualifications matter. Yeah, I don't think

54
00:03:45.280 --> 00:03:47.280
they. I don't think they do
either because of the way people are getting

55
00:03:47.400 --> 00:03:50.919
right, you're getting it, you
get, you get. It's not directly

56
00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:53.840
over the counterbit it practically is because
you're not mostly not dealing with a real

57
00:03:53.879 --> 00:03:59.120
doctor. Every minute you know,
you're you're checking in with a with a

58
00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:03.360
doctor, and you know they're probably
motivated to continue selling it because they're making

59
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:06.159
money. Well, not even just
in America. It doesn't matter if it's

60
00:04:06.159 --> 00:04:09.439
over the counter or not. You
can get whatever you want. Yeah,

61
00:04:09.439 --> 00:04:12.680
this is true. People joke about
Mexico making everything legal, but like,

62
00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:15.000
if you want something in America,
you can go get it. You pretty

63
00:04:15.040 --> 00:04:21.600
much go get it. The An
interesting thing about about doctor Nadolski, though,

64
00:04:21.680 --> 00:04:25.639
is he is now the medical director
of Weight Watchers, and weight Watchers

65
00:04:25.720 --> 00:04:30.279
has always been anti diet drug.
Did Oprah hop out of that thing Oprah

66
00:04:30.360 --> 00:04:36.480
left the board. Yeah, and
and the reason that was given was that

67
00:04:36.560 --> 00:04:43.680
she was using one of one of
these drugs and didn't want to, you

68
00:04:43.720 --> 00:04:47.000
know, be the one setting the
exam. You know, an example that

69
00:04:47.040 --> 00:04:55.759
goes against what supposedly the the philosophy
of the company. But on the other

70
00:04:55.839 --> 00:05:00.079
hand, doctor Nadelski is someone who
is a proponent of it. So I

71
00:05:00.079 --> 00:05:03.560
don't know. It feels like maybe
there was another reason, or she just

72
00:05:03.639 --> 00:05:10.519
has personal she has personal feelings about
about the message, it, sentence or

73
00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:13.319
whatever. Yeah, who knows?
Who? Yeah, who knows? This

74
00:05:13.360 --> 00:05:15.959
is really quick. It's such a
big business when you're starting to deal with

75
00:05:15.160 --> 00:05:18.360
in those realms. Who knows what's
going on? Correct? Yes, the

76
00:05:18.360 --> 00:05:24.399
more the more digits to the left
of the decimal point, the more complicated

77
00:05:24.399 --> 00:05:30.399
thing. Sure, sure so,
in particular for like our world, the

78
00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:35.720
question is about muscle loss. How
you know, people talk about ozembic face

79
00:05:35.959 --> 00:05:42.639
or Ozmpic butt. I haven't heard
of ozmpic butt. Yeah. Basically yeah,

80
00:05:42.720 --> 00:05:46.000
flat yeah, yeah, No one
likes is the fact. I swear

81
00:05:46.040 --> 00:05:51.360
to God when in the nineties a
flat ass was hot though maybe now for

82
00:05:51.439 --> 00:05:55.680
sure, like you look at all
the models and stuff in the nineties and

83
00:05:55.720 --> 00:05:59.160
they're all like stick thin. Yeah, you're super thin. Yeah. No,

84
00:05:59.600 --> 00:06:01.720
Like maybe titties were hot, like
they just started to become like a

85
00:06:01.800 --> 00:06:04.879
thing to give fake tits, like
the Pam Anderson's and Carmen and Electras.

86
00:06:04.879 --> 00:06:10.319
But like all the sexy chicks on
the commercials and whatever, he had like

87
00:06:10.399 --> 00:06:13.800
no ass, and now everyone's got
a fake ass. Everyone has to fake

88
00:06:13.800 --> 00:06:15.519
ass. Yeah, that's it.
The revolution is the fake ass. I

89
00:06:15.519 --> 00:06:19.600
mean it's you know, there's no
in between. It's boobs on your butt,

90
00:06:19.680 --> 00:06:23.959
you know. Yeah, yeah,
yeah, every rapper's got a fucking

91
00:06:25.480 --> 00:06:29.279
crazy surgery. Ass surgery. It's
just so crazy. That's only twenty years

92
00:06:29.360 --> 00:06:36.279
difference to go from not only the
extremes, but what all society in the

93
00:06:36.279 --> 00:06:41.160
Western world considers. Yeah, roughly. Obviously, everyone's got their own personal

94
00:06:41.199 --> 00:06:43.639
preference. You can like flat asses
for all I care. I don't give

95
00:06:43.639 --> 00:06:47.480
a fuck what you like. But
generally the society and the culture is now.

96
00:06:48.160 --> 00:06:53.879
Yeah, just talk about one eighty
holy shit pum swinging. Yeah yeah,

97
00:06:53.920 --> 00:06:59.279
and the whole like valuing an ass
and the thigh gap at the same

98
00:06:59.360 --> 00:07:01.240
time. Yeah, yes, I
got it. Yeah, in our world

99
00:07:01.319 --> 00:07:04.519
is faux pa. But in general, people still dig it, and then

100
00:07:04.600 --> 00:07:08.600
hip dips are a thing people talk
about, but that's like genetic, I

101
00:07:08.600 --> 00:07:11.040
mean, all of its kind of
genetic. I don't know. Man,

102
00:07:11.439 --> 00:07:14.519
it's hard to be a dude in
the fitness space, but it's probably really

103
00:07:14.519 --> 00:07:16.160
hard to be a chick. I
imagine it's very challenging yeh, yeah,

104
00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:24.160
to meet expectations. But anyway,
I will I will link some studies into

105
00:07:24.240 --> 00:07:31.360
this. But talking about muscle mass
loss, apparently studies are showing that the

106
00:07:31.480 --> 00:07:36.959
muscle mass loss is about the same
as losing weight period. Yeah. Part

107
00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:40.279
of the issue probably is, yeah, again, who they're testing. If

108
00:07:40.279 --> 00:07:44.279
they're testing people that actually qualify for
the drug, then chances are they might

109
00:07:44.319 --> 00:07:46.639
not be eating adequate protein to begin
with. Yeah, they're probably not resistance

110
00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:50.319
training to begin with. They're probably
not very athletic and fit to begin with.

111
00:07:50.480 --> 00:07:54.959
So then, like not to say
the studies don't matter, but it

112
00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:59.839
almost controls that variable quickly, right, It controls a variable. Have no

113
00:07:59.839 --> 00:08:01.560
mo ustle, get no muscle,
yeah exactly. Yeah, if you're if

114
00:08:01.560 --> 00:08:07.920
you're peeling stuff off, and if
you particularly if you're losing muscle and fat

115
00:08:07.959 --> 00:08:11.639
in the same proportion, you know, fifty to fifty ish whatever. Yeah,

116
00:08:11.720 --> 00:08:16.600
at that point it just doesn't matter
really because yeah, if you're eight

117
00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:18.879
hundred pounds, we just got to
get some weight off you, so you're

118
00:08:18.759 --> 00:08:22.040
fucking pipes can work a little better. But then once yeah, once you

119
00:08:22.120 --> 00:08:26.800
start to get into the casual user
of it, right, that's yeah,

120
00:08:26.920 --> 00:08:30.720
may or may not matter, or
or or you know, again, it

121
00:08:30.759 --> 00:08:33.320
may have different effects depending on the
age group, depending on how active they

122
00:08:33.320 --> 00:08:37.159
are. If they're if the studies
on a bunch of people that are like

123
00:08:37.279 --> 00:08:41.480
extreme obese and have no activity,
they're losing no muscle, maybe because they

124
00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:43.039
got no muscle to lose. Yeah, right, if we do it on

125
00:08:43.159 --> 00:08:46.480
more of a moderate crowd and we
hit some fifty year olds that are just

126
00:08:46.519 --> 00:08:50.559
a little bit overweight and still qualify
for this, maybe they are type two

127
00:08:50.720 --> 00:08:56.039
or something. Are they losing muscle
at rates that may be unhealthy? Or

128
00:08:56.519 --> 00:09:00.879
bone I know, bone density in
intensity is an issue that's still being studied.

129
00:09:00.960 --> 00:09:03.840
Yeah, that's always been a thing
with diet drugs and dieting in general,

130
00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:07.080
and diabetes obviously, absorption of vitamins
and minerals with all these drugs,

131
00:09:07.080 --> 00:09:11.440
because even in my time in the
fitness industry. Like, I've paid attention

132
00:09:11.480 --> 00:09:15.759
to the shit since maybe two thousand
and six closely, and before that was

133
00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:18.080
just you know, magazines or whatever. Beef had magazines, but uh,

134
00:09:18.679 --> 00:09:24.679
there's never been a drug that people
like were like kind of about. Yeah.

135
00:09:24.759 --> 00:09:28.279
Most of them were sugar pills,
you know, or they're so extreme

136
00:09:28.320 --> 00:09:31.559
they just didn't work. Like to
have an actual diet pill that may help,

137
00:09:31.159 --> 00:09:33.919
but again, like it doesn't really
help, right because then when you

138
00:09:33.960 --> 00:09:37.159
get off it, what's gonna happen. Have you changed your habits, have

139
00:09:37.240 --> 00:09:39.879
you exercised, do you know how
to eat? Do you understand anything about

140
00:09:39.960 --> 00:09:43.759
nutrition? Are you still going back
to your big gulp of you know,

141
00:09:43.240 --> 00:09:48.759
one hundred and eighty grams of sugar
every gas station. So, like the

142
00:09:48.120 --> 00:09:52.960
root cause may not be an issue
or may still be an issue. Yeah,

143
00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:58.720
for sure. And just like with
regular dieting, like it's not if

144
00:09:58.759 --> 00:10:01.639
you're trying to lose weight, it's
not really acquired that you lift weights,

145
00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:05.600
do resistance training, get exercise whatever. It's just so much better for your

146
00:10:05.720 --> 00:10:09.679
body in the end, and a
way to deal with with potential muscle loss

147
00:10:09.720 --> 00:10:16.799
and any kind of of fat loss
scenario is resistance training. Yeah, I

148
00:10:16.799 --> 00:10:18.279
mean that's the habit part, right, Yeah, what are you trying to

149
00:10:18.320 --> 00:10:22.200
be healthy and move? And as
you get older and you fall and you

150
00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:24.759
bump shit, do you want muscle
and bone to be ready for it?

151
00:10:24.799 --> 00:10:28.679
And the only way to get continue
that is resistance training. You know,

152
00:10:28.759 --> 00:10:31.600
milk can diet, it doesn't really
have a ton to do with it.

153
00:10:31.759 --> 00:10:33.840
Enough protein to list some weights is
a way to kind of help all your

154
00:10:33.840 --> 00:10:37.960
bones and all your muscles. But
it should go in phases. And that's

155
00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:43.360
the issue if you're calling someone like
a pharmaceutical shill, Like how many doctors

156
00:10:43.399 --> 00:10:46.240
are like paid by the round or
by the point of what they're doing,

157
00:10:46.279 --> 00:10:48.440
and so they're seeing someone for five
minutes because they're checking off their list,

158
00:10:48.480 --> 00:10:52.320
they go on the next person,
the next person, rather than if you

159
00:10:52.440 --> 00:10:56.039
have someone who's type two and all
this stuff and they're trying to change them,

160
00:10:56.240 --> 00:10:58.960
you know, they need like real
consulting and like habit changes, life

161
00:10:58.039 --> 00:11:01.799
changes. Yeah, Mozimbic would be
great to kick start that. Yeah,

162
00:11:01.840 --> 00:11:05.399
you know, so they're not slamming
mcflurries at midnight every night, and maybe

163
00:11:05.399 --> 00:11:11.519
they're not as hungry, But then
if they're not learning anything about healthy lifestyle

164
00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:16.120
or an active lifestyle, then now
we're just kind of yeah, they're popping

165
00:11:16.159 --> 00:11:24.159
steroids and the dead chicken. Yeah. The the recommendation obviously is to have

166
00:11:24.799 --> 00:11:28.559
diet, you know, the nutrition, counseling and sure all of that stuff

167
00:11:28.559 --> 00:11:31.519
and len therapy for a lot of
people just straight up talk therapy and stuff

168
00:11:33.200 --> 00:11:37.799
along with these drugs and not to
take them by themselves. But that's also

169
00:11:37.919 --> 00:11:48.080
true of like any depression drugs,
and they get prescribed all the time without

170
00:11:48.240 --> 00:11:50.799
the without the talk therapy component.
When you talk about the reality of all

171
00:11:50.840 --> 00:11:56.000
this, like say someone is extreme
overweight, you can't even hold a job,

172
00:11:56.799 --> 00:12:00.720
how are they going to afford the
pill doctor, visits nutrition, personal

173
00:12:00.759 --> 00:12:03.240
trainer. I mean, that's the
only way it's going to work. Chances

174
00:12:03.279 --> 00:12:09.879
that you just all of a sudden
become so motivated and grab all the information

175
00:12:09.960 --> 00:12:13.799
on Google, start working out by
yourself three times a week, start eating

176
00:12:13.799 --> 00:12:18.200
perfectly, and taking ozepic without any
professional help is probably slimmed to none.

177
00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:22.759
And then the fact that you're in
this situation to begin with and you can

178
00:12:22.799 --> 00:12:28.960
afford the time and the money to
do grab all these professionals probably also slim

179
00:12:28.960 --> 00:12:33.799
to none. You know, I've
never heard or seen that type of transformation

180
00:12:33.879 --> 00:12:35.000
just because it's so hard people have
done on their own, for sure,

181
00:12:35.039 --> 00:12:39.679
and I've got people like that that
something did flip and they have fixed it.

182
00:12:39.720 --> 00:12:43.639
But that's one in a billion.
And then yeah, it's just it's

183
00:12:43.679 --> 00:12:48.240
just such a complicated issue, starting
with education and just generally how our whole

184
00:12:48.360 --> 00:12:54.039
society's built up. Sadly, Yeah, for sure. So well, this

185
00:12:54.080 --> 00:12:58.080
is not a medical show. We
are, but don't take ozepic, you

186
00:12:58.159 --> 00:13:01.440
fatties. Go figure it out.
Or if you do, do it the

187
00:13:01.519 --> 00:13:03.639
right way. That's yeah, go
lift some weight. That's true about dieting

188
00:13:03.679 --> 00:13:07.879
period. Do it the right way. You need to start lifting waste,

189
00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:09.360
do it the right way. Yeah, go lift weights, Go lift weights.

190
00:13:09.440 --> 00:13:13.559
It fixes a lot of things.
